My project is “The Right Side of History” and is a Civil/Equal Rights movement. Discrimination is fueled by these horrible laws spreading around the world like a plague.
Please go to the project, watch the video, and read everything I plan to do. Support it if you are able. Any amount will help but be sure to read the perks on the left side of the screen.
If nothing else, will you please post a link to my project on your Facebook wall, Twitter feed, Google+ stream, Tumblr blog, Pinterest Boards, etc. Talk about the project to everyone. Word of mouth is what will make this a success.
This is how I feel is the best way for me to contribute to a better social society.

Thank you so much!
I’ve been asked a couple questions over the past few days about why I’m doing the project, “The Right Side of History.” Today, I am going to start answering them publicly. So here goes the first question:
“Why now? Why did it take North Carolina’s Amendment for you to decide to do this when Prop 8 was so long ago?”
That is a very good question, actually. One that I have had to ask myself. My answer isn’t a wise one but it is the truth.
When the voters of California passed Prop 8 I was in shock. That shock quickly faded into disappointment. There were plenty of voices out there screaming for repeal. In my mind it was all going to turn out okay, and very soon.
However, 29 other states would follow. Each state chipped away at me. Slowly, I was loosing hope. Then it was time for North Carolina with Amendment 1.
I know the city I live in. I know the people well. After all, I was born here. Charlotte is a fantastic city. The six months leading up to the Amendment 1 vote was full of Vote Against cheerleading from all over this area. The City Council itself even voted to condemn it.
When the day of the vote came I knew it was going to be close, but when the evening came and the results were in, my world came crumbling down. Yes, Charlotte-Mecklenburg did have a majority against vote. All the counties with the big colleges had a majority against vote. However, it was wasn’t enough to overcome the rural areas.
I was mad, crushed, confused. As a gay man I am used to being discriminated against, but with this amendment they were now hurting our straight friends and their children. This isn’t friendly fire. This is simple hate out of control.
Thankfully, the rage won out and that’s when I said enough. It was time to act. That’s why I started this project now.
It is the Prop 8s and Amendment 1s of the world that are perpetuating bullying, hindering economic development, and so forth. I will no longer stand idle. I will no longer stay quiet. I will act.

The Right Side of History (http://igg.me/p/107145?a=254531)
May 8, 2012
Civil Rights were once again compromised.
North Carolina passed a constitutional amendment stating: “Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.”
Effectively eliminating the rights of both unmarried straight and gay couples alike while also putting the welfare of children at risk.
30 other US states preceded North Carolina with similar amendments.
However, the battle for civil rights is not new.
And it’s a long way from being over.
After Amendment 1 I got mad.
Really mad.
Now I’m on a mission for the truth to fight the lies.
For the next 12 months I will collect the voices of educators, politicians, youth, seniors, and anyone else with a view on gay rights, women’s rights, and Equal Rights for all.
I will explore each argument from both sides. Researching laws and constitutions, historical perspectives versus facts, and the economic and social effects of discrimination.
Debunking the myths and proving what is true.
I will research the history of each movement on a local, regional, national, and global front. Finding and comparing the parallels with today’s struggles.
All in the search for truth.
Follow each moment as I document them on my blog, in video, on Twitter and Facebook and offer your comments and suggestions the whole way.
Through your engagement you will be a big part of this project’s development and success.
At the end of the 12 months, I’ll compile, edit, and publish everything in book form and as a full documentary film to be used as a resource to conclusively win equality for us all.
Support “The Right Side of History” today by backing the project with whatever you can.
Even $5 will help make this happen.
Continue to spread the project and it’s mission through all of your personal and social networks and organizations.
With your support we can arm ourselves with knowledge.
We’re 2nd class citizens now.
We don’t have to be.

The Right Side of History — Indiegogo.
Tonight I launched my IndieGogo campaign. Tomorrow I will upload a video for it.
The “The Right Side of History” is a transmedia project with a mission to collect all information and view points concerning the history and future of Civil Rights movements. At the end of the project backers will receive perks including a published report in book or ebook form and/or a documentary of the journey on DVD or media file, plus serve as a comprehensive reference for the battle for equality.
On May 8, 2012, North Carolina, my home state, approved Amendment 1 which ended the rights of both straight and gay couples to protect their families. It stated “that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.” With the approval of this measure, North Carolina became the thirty-first state to have a constitutional amendment prohibiting same sex marriage. On May 9, 2012, The President of the United States, Barack Obama, voiced his support of same sex marriage. However, the fight for equality is far from over.
The Right Side of History will facilitate the continuing debate and progress of the current state of equality and freedom. It will be a driving force to restore the rights of healthcare and protection from violence for our children and communities.
For the next year I am devoting all of my time and efforts, my whole life, to finding truth by fostering productive and open conversations from all view points. I will examine every argument from global, national, regional, and local levels. With Social Media this project will be interactive and transparent every step of the way. Blogs will be posted twice a week and videos will be uploaded weekly. The public will be able to view interviews on the week that they happen and offer their suggestions and comments at the same time.
To accomplish this, my intention is to go to where the voices, for and against, live. This project will take me to all 50 states (100 + cities) plus the Nation’s capital to understand the similarities and differences of cultures that the voices come from. Also, to obtain a full global understanding of civil rights from a current and historical view, I will be visiting 10 other countries (18 cities).
Throughout my travels, I will seek out and interview clergy, executives, organizational leaders, politicians, public figures, youth, seniors, etc. I will research laws and constitutions, historical perspectives and facts, economic and social effects of discrimination. No stone will be left unturned in search of the truth to support or debunk every argument. Both liberal and conservative opinions will be put through the same scrutiny.
I am David Boling, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina. At 38 years old, I have seen enough of intolerance, oppression, and manipulation. Now I aim to search out undeniable truths of our world. I have worked in the corporate world, nonprofit world, entertainment industry, and currently as a digital media and brand management consultant. My passion lies in building relationships and connecting people, causes and businesses to their full potential.
I live my life with this in mind:
“It’s in the constant search for knowledge that we discover the potential of others and the reality of ourselves. It’s in the constant dedication to service that we discover the potential of ourselves and the realities of others.”
In return for your help I have created several perks including copies (print and digital) of the Book and DVD. All perks come with recognition from social media mentions to levels of producer credit. For the top four tiers there are opportunities for speaking engagements along with private screenings and readings. Everyone is welcome to participate in having their say heard in the process. Just contact me through email or social media outlets.
In the future there will be more opportunities for speaking engagements so if you or your organization is interested please contact me.
Of course, any donation is greatly appreciated and you will be acknowledged.
To do this project for the full year and fulfill perks it will cost me about $150,000 USD. I know the amount may seem staggering but with an entire community working together in unison anything is possible. The $150,000 includes equipment, travel, editing, and publishing cost. Any extra funds will go to hiring a team of experts to assist with filming and editing along with post production marketing. It would be my ideal to be able to print enough DVDs and Books for distribution to civil rights organizations.
This campaign relies on getting the word out:

In a perfect world job hunting would be much different. It would be the companies spending tireless hours posting on and fighting for prospective talent. The companies would have to silently, depressingly accept the multitude of rejection emails or the absence of correspondence all together.
Wouldn’t it be nice to turn the tables and post your availability? Wouldn’t it feel great to have corporations battling against each other for you?
This is what my posting would look like.

IRL is the real key
Get out! You’ve spent so much time sitting in front of that computer screen, it’s time to get out of the house. Try a little IRL or “In Real Life” time. What is the purpose of interacting online with all these new connections if you aren’t going to actually do something with those relationships? Get out!
Before you start roaming aimlessly around the country roads starting one sided conversations with interesting bovine, let me be more clear.
Most of the “movers and shakers” of the social world are known for creating in person networking opportunities. Usually based around common interests these events offer you boundless chances to leverage your brand. You will normally be able to find events near you by searching sites like Meetup.com, Eventful.com, and Eventbrite.com. Of course, there may be other sites in your area as well.
I am lucky enough to live in a city full of these movers and shakers and never have a lack of events to attend. Through these events I’ve gained some great friends, learned enormous amounts of new knowledge, and acquired countless leads.
My favorite events in Charlotte are branches of:
Collaborate Freely
“Reputation is an idle and most false imposition; oft got without merit, and lost without deserving.”
Don’t worry, the hard part is over. This is where the fun starts and new relationships begin to develop. Just remember, Social Media is about networking and making great impressions. Great impressions will open up a world of opportunities for you to take advantage of.
Profile Consistency and Understanding Their Purposes
Each social media site was created to meet a certain desire in our digital lives. Some are very narrow in purpose, while others seek to combine our desires. Using them correctly is essential to success. Would you walk into Macy’s and expect to buy a rack of lamb?
Here is a simple list of the a few social sites and their uses (links will take you to my profiles where possible).
As you can see there is some overlap. Remember that they are all businesses in themselves and they all want to compete as much as possible. Still, know their basic functions and use them for what they are.
As an added bonus you can connect your sites together. In other words, you can connect Twitter and Facebook so that when you post to one it will update the other. Just know that if you post heavily on Twitter that means you are posting heavily on Facebook. Personally, I have those two set up to only post together when I want them to do so. I use Twitter much more and save my Facebook for more link sharing than conversation.
Just check your settings on each site and see what your options are (they are always changing). Then evaluate how much you want to use each one and make the connections that are most appropriate for you. There are no right or wrong answers as long as you are responsible with your reputation.
How much should you post? Again, there are right or wrong answers. I suggest using each site everyday when you can. Multiple times a day. What matters is that your information is relevant, honest and informative to your intended audience. Take the opportunity to showcase your talents, skills, interests, passions and knowledge. That is what matters.
One last thing, keeping consistent with profile pictures (avatars) and bios would be prudent. You are creating a brand. A brand should be recognized from first glance. There will be some instances where you will have to alter a picture or wording, but that is fine as long as the same message and impression comes across.
Strategic Interactions and Relationship Building
Discovery makes the world an interesting place to be. I can give thanks to social media for three things; connecting me with great people from my past and new relationships locally and globally, discovering some of the the best talent and minds in the world, and exposing me to views and news that before I would never have been able to ponder.
Make information work for you. Read news from around the world, share it with your network, and create remarkable discussion. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow! Don’t miss out on it. Relationships grown from constructive debate is invaluable. Get informed on a subject and talk about it and watch as other’s respect for you builds. Tip: You don’t have to always be right. Just be open.
Seek out others with similar interests. Learn from their posts and don’t be afraid to modify your stance on a topic with new information. Grow with it. Growth is essential to our eternal development. Most sites will give you suggestions of others that you may want to connect with. Normally the suggestions are based with consideration to your current connections and interests. It really is rather easy. Just don’t expect to have 1000′s of followers and friends over night. It’s a process that takes time. Worry about quality, not quantity.

Your Brand, Your Responsibility Part 1 of 3 - Creating Your Brand
For the past few months I have had the unexpected pleasure of speaking to our clients about brands and responsibility. Not only is it a pleasure, but a passion and a privilege. So today I decided I should share my presentation with the rest of the world. Shortened for your sanity of course.
What is a digital brand?
Simply put, your digital brand is the reputation that can be derived from the internet. Face it, even if you do not use the internet the chances that your face and name can be found online are pretty high. My best guess is that it’s around 99.9% (not meant to be a factual statement).
Go ahead and, as we say, “Google” yourself. I’ll wait. Don’t forget to use variations of your name; current and former alias, maiden names, etc. Also, plug in locations where you have lived and companies you have worked for. Schools are a great detail to add to the searches as well.
| This is me waiting. |
Finished? I would put money down on the fact that you found at least two things:
Regretting wearing that speedo out to the club now, aren’t you? I would too. Surprised that someone else’s arrest details and mugshot came up so high in the results? I thought so.
At this point, supposing you have nothing to do with the internet and online communities, you are at the mercy of public information, ticked off servers, and thoughtless acquaintances.
Your face and your name have been tainted for the whole world to see.
Don’t waist time being angry. Angry isn’t going to help and you need to take action. What’s the rush? Every day thousands, if not tens of thousands, if not more, are learning to use the internet. Church deacons, CEO’s, the neighbor’s 3 year old, and your very own granny. No time to pout because others have framed your digital reputation, your brand, for you. Now it’s time to be proactive and take action before the whole community is at your door with pitch forks and torches.
“Regard your good name as the richest jewel you can possibly be possessed of – for credit is like fire; when once you have kindled it you may easily preserve it, but if you once extinguish it, you will find it an arduous task to rekindle it again. The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear.”
~ Socrates
How can you create a reputable brand?
Regardless of whether you found negative information during your search or no information at all, now is the time to take up arms. What are your weapon’s of choice in this battle?
There are those, including many of my coworkers, that would say if you don’t use Facebook or Twitter just keep it that way. I am not one of those people. By no means am I suggesting you have to use them, just if you want to then do it right. Make it a positive impression instead of a careless and costly one. Social sites can be powerful weapons. Weapons I would advise to use.
First, make sure your email address isn’t HotSexySpeedo1963@yomammamail.com. That’s going to come back to sting you soon. A professional email address with just your name is what you want. Use the day and month of your birth if you need to. You’re going to need this email address to register all your accounts with and others will be able to use it to find you. So let them find you in a less suggestive way.
Second, create your profiles on all the major social networking sites. This includes LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, etc. Make sure to fill everything out completely! Incomplete profiles are seen as just plain lazy or suspicious. Other sites, value adding sites, I would suggest are Flickr, Tumblr, Pinterest and Foursquare. Also, start a blog and create a website that identifies you. If you are lucky you will be able to purchase your name as a website domain. These digital properties are going to enhance your reach and provide extra results for search engines to find.
Third, Try to get any negative content taken down. Figure out who the person was that posted the picture of you in a speedo. Hopefully, it is a close friend that just wasn’t thinking, but probably not. Contact them and explain that you want them to remove this picture. You are trying to build a great reputation and this just isn’t going to help. Once they have refused to, and since there is nothing you can do about public information on that other person with your name, then it’s time to get to work.
Fourth, link, connect, friend, and/or like everyone you know well. This includes anyone that would give you a great recommendation; family, friends, clergy, neighbors, businesses, etc. Stay away from that guy who posted the picture and any drug dealers you may know.
Fifth, post relevant material daily and interact with others. Here’s a simple guide:
Don’t post:
